Duane F. Alwin, Ph.D., is a descendant of Johannes (Hans) Jacob and Catharina Allwein. He received graduate degrees in sociology from the University of Wisconsin and has been teaching at the university level for more than 40 years. He has worked on a number of family history projects over the past 20 years and has written several books and articles on these topics. In this work he employs an ethnographic approach to doing family history research, one that emphasizes going to the geographic areas where the families he studies lived, familiarizing himself with the environs, and tapping local resources for information on their historical roots.
